Bespoke wood flooring in Cambridge home

We were invited to Nigel & Connie’s Cambridge home to install a wood floor and to insulate below the existing subfloor to keep draughts out and retain warmth.

But there was a lot more involved in this project than just fitting a new floor!

The project: to install a beautiful new wood floor with added insulation

For our clients, Nigel & Connie, this project was about more than just a stunning new wood floor. Living in the heart of Cambridge, they wanted to improve their home's warmth and comfort by insulating beneath their existing subfloor, ensuring a draught-free and energy-efficient space.

The challenge

At Art of Flooring, we don’t just fit new flooring – we ensure that the structures below are sound and that your floor has a firm base. We want your new floor to stand the test of time.

During our initial survey, Sam assessed the property before one of our skilled installers conducted a thorough inspection. It became clear that, before installing the new flooring, additional structural work was required.

The solution

Our expert installer, John, began by carefully removing the existing skirting boards and floorboards.

However, once they were exposed, it became evident that some joists were in poor condition, with previous woodworm damage affecting their strength.

To ensure a solid foundation, John reinforced and strengthened the joists before proceeding with the insulation.

Next, rigid PIR insulation boards were fitted between the joists, helping to significantly reduce heat loss and eliminate unwanted draughts.

This was a key aim of Nigel & Connie when they came to visit our Cambridge showroom.

After this, we fitted the floor! That was the easy part.

Once the insulation was in place, we installed a premium 20mm engineered wood floor, securing it directly to the repaired and reinforced joists for lasting durability. To complete the transformation, new skirting boards were fitted, ensuring a seamless and polished finish.

The final result

For their flooring, Nigel & Connie had chosen Shelford from our bespoke range – a beautiful light smoked, UV-oiled finish in a rustic-grade plank. The result? A warm, stylish and energy-efficient home.

Another project where craftsmanship meets comfort – because at Art of Flooring, we don’t just fit floors, we create spaces to be enjoyed for years to come.
