Rustic Mixed Smoked Oak Herringbone – David Parr Visitors Centre – Cambridge

Rustic Mixed Smoked Oak Herringbone with Pallmann Magic Oil Finish installed in the David Parr House Visitors Center

You may have heard about the David Parr House on Gwydir Street, celebrating the Arts and Crafts Movement. Typically, in this era floors were matt, wooden and conventionally finished with oil rather than varnished. We were lucky enough to be asked to provide the beautiful bespoke oak, parquet flooring in the visitors centre.

David Parr House is situated on Gwydir Street in Cambridge and is a preserved property that was lived in by artist and designer David Parr for 40 years after he first bought the property in 1886. During his time at the property he used his considerable talents to paint intricate designs, murals and artwork on the floors, ceilings and the walls of the property which have been preserved to this day. David Parr’s granddaughter Elsie took ownership of the property in 1927 after Parr’s death and continued to live there for 85 years. Even though she married and raised a family within the property she still managed to preserve her grandfather’s artwork during her long tenure at the house.

The house was eventually bought by Tamsin Wimhurst and her husband Mike in 2014 and it was then set up as a charity with the aim of preserving the house and opening it up to the public for tours. The house itself needed a lot of work from specialist structural and architectural teams to bring it up to a safe standard for accommodating the public, but also to preserve it’s original state and the art work therein.

A visitor centre has also been set up in the property next door, and this is where the Art of Flooring team have had the pleasure of creating this floor.

Art of Flooring installed a Rustic Mixed Smoked Oak Herringbone which had been tumbled to give it more of an aged look, into the visitors centre of the David Parr House. This floor was then finsihed using Pallmann Magic Oil to really bring out the natural colours of the wood and provide long lasting finish.
