How Eco-Friendly is Wool Carpet?

Sustainability and caring for the environment are evermore at the forefront of our minds, both as individuals and as an industry.

This is why the more eco-friendly our products are, the better. Is wool carpet one of these?

This article takes us through the pros and cons of wool carpet from an environmental point of view.

A natural material

Wool is a natural material and comes from a sustainable source, sheep, so from this point of view wool carpets get a big tick in terms of being environmentally friendly.

It is also biodegradable so will break down, returning nutrients to the soil at the end of its life.

Air qualilty and home environment

Wool naturally cleans the air around it and it’s natural structure is more resistant to dirt, meaning the surrounding air quality will be better. It neutralises Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), where as synthetic carpets don’t.

It also helps maintain heat in the home so is an energy-efficient product.

Long lasting

Wool is also hard-wearing, so it is not something that will have to be replaced within a short period of being fitted, unlike its synthetic competitors.

The backing

If a carpet backing is made from recycled materials, then it will be more environmentally friendly. For example, plastic flakes, made from plastic bottles can be made into a felt backing for the carpet. Being from a recycled source, this backing will not create negative emissions. This can be regenerated again and again.

Disposal

Our industry does generate waste and we are very aware of this so we try to mitigate our impact where we can. Art of Flooring are members of Carpet Recycling UK, a not-for-profit membership association working to increase the recycling of carpet waste across the UK.

In summary

Wool is definitely a better alternative than a synthetic carpet from an environmental point of view and is an eco friendly flooring choice.

It is a long-lasting, therefore less wasteful product and made from a natural sustainable source.

It also protects air quality in the home and is energy efficient .

If the backing on it is made from a recycled source, this goes a long way to making it even better for the environment. It is also biodegradable so at the end of its life can be returned to the ground adding nutrients to the soil as it breaks down.

If you are debating the type of carpet you want to buy, then rest assured, that wool is a carpet that is eco friendly.
