How to Clean and Maintain Wood Flooring – A practical guide to ensure our customers can keep their wood floors in good condition.

Wood Flooring is a beautiful floor type, and it is important to keep it in wonderful condition. It is great choice as is it easy to clean and hard wearing so will not easily damage. Here is your guide to helping keep it as it should be.

4 tips to help you care for your wood floor

Wood flooring has a degree of treatment in the production process, and it will have been oiled or lacquered to give it longevity and a beautiful finish, however there are things you can do to ensure that you keep it in optimum condition and retain its high performance.

1. Protect your floor from scratching and abrasive materials

Ensure that you use soft pads on the bottom of table legs and heavy chairs to help protect the floor from scratches. Never drag heavy items across a wood floor as it WILL damage it.

Place a doormat at the entrance to your home so that dirt and gravel from shoes is left at the door. Additionally, consider footwear choices for use indoors to ensure your floor is protected from damage.

2. Vacuum or sweep

Vacuum regularly with a suction vacuum cleaner or sweep with a soft brush and ensure you have removed larger debris like glass or grit beforehand will keep your floor free from dirt which can damage the floor.

3. Clean spillages quickly

Spillages should be wiped up quickly to avoid staining, you can also use a damp, well wrung sponge to removed marks (see later tips for cleaning stains)

Water is the enemy of wood so any mopping MUST be carried out with cold water, a recommended cleaning product for your wood type and a very well wrung mop to avoid water penetrating the wood, which could cause it to swell or warp. Cleaning products will differ for lacquered or oiled

Never use abrasive, ammonia-based or silicone-based cleaners as these can permanently mark your wood floor, ruining all your hard work and detergent based cleaning products like fairy liquid can dissolve oils.

You should also limit mopping the floor to once a month as moisture can irreparably damage the wood.

4. Maintain your floor

A lacquered floor - The lacquer coating on your wood floor will naturally deteriorate over time. Depending on how worn the lacquer is, you can apply a polish or a matt or satin ‘metallizing’ protective layer to restore its appearance. You can ask us for advice on this.

An oiled floor - Oiled wood floors are finished with a topcoat that preserves the natural look of the wood whilst adding shine and ensuring a soft feel underfoot. This needs to be maintained once a year using a simple to apply maintenance oil that we can advise on.

Do not use wax on an oiled floor

Things to avoid

Sunlight – UV rays can damage the colour of the floor

Too much water on any type of wood floor - Always use a well wrung mop when mopping and keep mopping to a monthly event at the most.

Avoid using steam cleaners or hot water.

Avoid using the wrong cleaning products, ask which products will suit your floor best.

If your floor is stained, there are ways to get the stains out but we would advise you ask a professional for help in any of these circumstances however as they will know exactly what they are doing and can treat the damage without causing further issues.

We hope these tips help you to care for your wood floor and enable you to keep it looking beautiful for years to come!
