A new carpet is a big investment, both financially and physically, it fills a large part of your home so it needs to stay looking good.
Carpet plays many roles in a home, adding sound proofing, bringing underfloor cosiness and a touch of warmth, as well as bringing together a room’s decor, however lack of maintenance means these qualities could be at risk. A good routine is critical in keeping your flooring looking as good as it can.
Your carpet has already had a degree of treatment in the production process to give it longevity, however there are things you can do to ensure that you keep it in optimum condition and retain its high performance.
This guide is here to help you understand how best to care for your carpet, whether it is wool or synthetic or a mix.
A heavy-duty mat will catch a lot of dirt at the entrance to your house, preventing it being carried in and on to your carpets.
Also consider your footwear. Outdoor shoes worn in the home will cause wear and tear and create marks. Consider slippers or bare feet.
Furniture protectors on chair and table legs will also help protect your new floor.

A vacuum cleaner is a carpet’s best friend so vacuum your carpet regularly to remove loose dirt, prevent dust build up. It will also lift the pile again restoring life to the carpet.
Loop pile carpets should be hoovered with suction heads rather than beater heads which will catch fibres causing bobbling.
Make sure you check the bristles on the hoover and clean out the dust collecting area and hoover filter regularly for best results.
Spills are inevitable; tackle them quickly before they dry or stain.
Firstly, remove all lumps with a plastic spatula so you don’t rub them in to the carpet.
Then, blot excess liquid with a clean, absorbent cloth or kitchen towel.
Always dab, never rub.
On a clean cloth, use a little warm water or a cleaner specially designed for wool carpets, gently blot the stain, working from the outside in to minimise spreading. Continue this, replacing the cloth when necessary, until the stain has faded significantly. Be sure not to over-wet the carpet!
Finally, use a clean, white cloth and a little warm water and continue to blot the stain until disappeared.
If your stain is still visible after these steps- take a look at a care guide on your manufacturer’s website for more specific stain removal advice.
There is also an App called Wool Safe that can be downloaded. This gives advice on how to deal with stains.
You can also go to their website which is www.woolsafe.org and it will also give you lots of tips and guidance on cleaning stains.

Although you will be regularly hoovering your carpet and cleaning spot stains, your carpet will inevitably become dirty, so once a year consider having a professional clean or hire a cleaner and good quality cleaning agent to deep clean your carpet yourself.
1. Don’t over soak carpets when removing stains.
2. Avoid rubbing stains into the floor, so remove all lumps first and dab away excess liquid.
We hope these pointers help you to keep your carpet in the best possible condition.
