When investing in a stair runner you need to think about the nature of the pile used to create the runner. Stair runners and flatweave runners are often talked about in terms of their yarn being 2-ply or 3-ply. But what does this actually mean and how does it affect your carpet choice?
This refers to the number of individual strands or piles that are twisted together to form a single yarn. A 2 ply yarn has a simpler structure than a 3 ply yarn.
There are some key differences between the two so in order to get the stair runner that is right for you these differences are worth understanding.
2-ply yarn is less dense and less thick than a 3-ply yarn meaning the carpet made from a 2-ply yarn feels less plush underfoot. 3-ply yarn means a carpet will feel more substantial and sturdy.
3-ply yarn is more robust and durable than a 2-ply yarn. A high traffic area such as a staircase needs a dense, durable fabric in order for it to stay looking good and resist crushing under heavy footfall. This is why 3-ply yarns are often used in flatweave stair runners; the additional ply makes it more resistant.
2-ply yarn can feel smoother, refined and less bulky, unlike 3-ply carpet which is bulkier but has more depth and visual interest.

A 3-ply yarn can create a more complex and textured appearance. This can add character and visual appeal to the finished product in contrast to a more simple looking texture in a 2-ply.
On balance a 3-ply yarn is better suited to a staircase project due to the durability it offers. It will last longer and feel more comfortable underfoot.
Off the Loom, a manufacturer of 3-ply wool runners state on their website that they “use 100% Pure New Zealand Wool - 3 ply yarn to manufacture all of our products, this is more sumptuous & much harder wearing than 2 ply yarn used in other flatweave structures on the market, essential for a busy family home”
It is always worth understanding the different options available to you, however ultimately for a stair runner you need something durable. For this reason a 3-ply yarn would be an excellent choice for your home.
