The Story Beneath Your Feet: How Home Designs Tell Your Story

By Pierre de Wet, Founder – Art of Flooring, Cambridge

A heartfelt reflection on how the floors we choose become part of our story, blending heritage, craft, and care from the Art of Flooring team in Cambridge.

Just a week ago, our family embarked on a journey to Scotland to celebrate Dad's 80th birthday. We called it a holiday, but it turned into something much deeper, a journey of pride, gratitude, and rediscovery. It reminded me that home, history, and design all share one thing: they tell stories that last.

A Journey Back in Time

We travelled from Soham, Cambridgeshire, up through the Scottish borders, into Edinburgh, and then on to Glamis Castle in Angus.

It wasn't just a birthday surprise; it was a homecoming.

You see, our ancestor, Jacob de Wet II, was a Dutch artist who came to Scotland in the 1600s. King Charles II commissioned him to paint a series of portraits of more than 100 Scottish kings, which still hang in the Palace of Holyroodhouse today.

When we toured the Palace of Holyroodhouse, our guide Emma explained how Charles II wanted to show his heritage, his story, his strength. It was his way of saying, "This is who I am, and this is where I come from.”

Now, perhaps, it wasn't just pride. Maybe King Charles II also wanted to remind his people —and himself —that identity, legacy, and belonging are what bind us together.

And as I stood there, surrounded by those portraits, I felt something stir.

I realised that what Jacob de Wet created for a king and how we, at Art of Flooring, in our small but meaningful way, help people make their homes special.

What We Build Says Who We Are

At Art of Flooring, we don't just lay floors. We empower you to build your own unique story.

Every home tells you something about its owner, not through grand gestures, but through quiet choices.

The way light falls on oak. The warmth of underfoot timber on a winter morning. The texture that welcomes you home after a long day.

A floor is more than a surface; it's a reflection of who you are and how you want to live.

It's the foundation of your family's story.

That's why Phil, Darren, and Michael, with many years of industry experience, care so deeply about every floor they design and install.

They know it's not about what's fashionable this month, it's about what will still feel right in ten, twenty, or even up to fifty years.

Each plank. Each pattern. Each tone.

Chosen not just for beauty, but for meaning.

Because, like those royal portraits, a well-crafted floor becomes part of your history, something to walk on, to live on, and to be proud of.

The Art of Listening

If you've ever visited our Cambridge showroom, you'll know it's not just a place full of samples. It's a place full of conversations.

When a client walks in, Phil or Darren doesn't start by talking about products.

They ask questions.

"How do you live?"

"What kind of light do you get?"

"What feeling do you want when you walk into this room?"

Our design process begins with a simple yet powerful act: listening. We want to understand your lifestyle, your preferences, and your vision for your home.

Its teamwork built on care turns flooring from a purchase into a legacy.

I am so proud to see the feedback that highlights the great work our team does, and I know it also means so much to each of them.

Here are some:

Joanne Weston

“From our first contact to the final finish, Art of Flooring provided exceptional service and products. Phil gave great advice and assistance with our choices, and was always prompt to respond to questions. His help with providing answers to questions from our insurers took away a lot of stress as well. Mark's fitting was excellent, real attention to detail and ensuring things were exactly how we wanted them. We will definitely use them again, we already have another project in mind!”

Les Robinson

“Art of Flooring have just finished installing LVT in our hallway, dining room and living room. From our showroom visit, to home survey, quote and installation, everything has been like clockwork. Our fitter, Karl, was outstanding and I really can't praise him enough. Always on time, he was meticulous in his work, making sure everything was done properly. He tidied away at the end of each day and made sure everything was done to our satisfaction. The attached photos are a testament to his work.

At completion we received a phone call from Darren to ensure that we were happy and satisfied with the job which was a nice personal touch.

Overall we are so happy that we chose Art of Flooring and would thoroughly recommend them.”

Why Care Still Matters

We live in a fast-paced, disposable world where everything feels temporary. Trends come and go quickly. Nowadays, far too many products are designed to be used for a short time before being thrown away, rather than cherished.

However, showing genuine care for our belongings is an act of rebellion.

When you take time to choose, craft, and maintain something, you're saying: This matters.

You're investing not just in a home, but in a feeling, pride, peace, permanence.

We see it in our clients all the time.

That quiet smile when they first step onto a new herringbone oak floor. The way a family's energy changes when a room finally feels like them.

Those moments remind us: design isn't decoration. It is identity.

What Scotland Taught Me

At Holyroodhouse, Jacob de Wet's art told stories that had lasted more than 300 years.

At Glamis Castle, we saw his chapel paintings, soft, weathered, still breathtaking after centuries.

And I thought, "Why did they last?"

Because someone cared.

Someone maintained, restored, and preserved them.

Someone saw their worth.

It's the same with homes.

A beautiful floor doesn't just stay beautiful by accident. It lasts because someone loved it enough to look after it.

That's the quiet truth of craftsmanship, whether it's painting, carpentry, or design, care is what gives it life.

A Small Invitation

So here's what I'd love you to take from our trip.

Next time you walk into your home, take a moment to really see your floors.

Notice the patterns of sunlight, the gentle wear, the memories beneath your feet.

Ask yourself, What story does my home tell?

And if it's time to write a new chapter, we'd love to help you craft it.

We're here to listen and understand your needs, not to pressure you into a sale. Your home should tell your story, honestly and beautifully, and be built to last. Let's start crafting your new chapter together.

Not with pressure, but with pride.

Every home deserves a story that stands the test of time.
