Tongue and Groove vs Click Engineered Wooden Flooring

There are so many options to choose from, it can be difficult to decide what materials to pick and what method to install them in. Should you install them yourself or have a professional navigate this project? Hopefully by explaining the differences between these two installation methods, we can help you make more informed choices about your flooring projects.

Tongue and Groove style

Tongue and Groove style flooring is one of the most popular installment options for engineered wood flooring. Each plank features grooves that are cut into one long side and one short side. Sticking out on the opposite long and short side of that plank, are insertable wood pieces called tongues.

By sliding the tongue into the groove of an opposing plank, you secure the two planks together.

A professional installer will make sure that the existing subfloor is smooth and secure before secret nailing or glueing the planks down to secure the floor.

Planks can also be laid over an existing floor if it is safe and smooth. This is referred to as a floating installation.

A tongue and groove system for an engineered wood floor results in an enduring, consistent floor that will elevate your home for many years.

Click and lock style

A Click and lock system for installing engineered planks is the easier of the methods because the boards literally click together, and lock in place with no need for staples, nails or glue. The Click lock system is typically used over an existing floor, however the wood floor you are covering needs to be even and stable. If the existing floor is in bad shape, it is best to take out the old flooring and install on a new, smooth subfloor. The new planks cannot be installed over carpet either.
