Understanding the costs of carpet

Refreshing a room is as simple as replacing an ageing carpet, but with a multitude of choices available, how do you determine the right one?

The misconception

It's common to assume that a pricier carpet equates to superior quality, but the key lies in discovering the carpet that suits both your preferences and the specific room you're enhancing. The best option may not always be the most expensive one, furthermore, opting for a more affordable carpet doesn't necessarily translate to sacrificing quality.

Exploring the expenses associated with carpets

As with all forms of flooring, carpet comes with its own set of expenses, even though it is considered one of the more budget-friendly flooring choices. These are not just the financial costs, but also installation costs and environmental considerations.

This article addresses these considerations.

Type of carpet

Various carpet types come with varying price tags. Generally, carpets made from synthetic materials tend to be more budget-friendly, whereas those with wool blends tend to be somewhat pricier, and pure wool carpets are typically the most expensive. However, it's worth noting that affordable options for pure wool carpets are available in the market. Flat weave carpets, which are pure wool, are also at a higher price point due to the quality of the materials and their bespoke nature. A more dense, close-knit pile resulting in a heavier carpet will also have a higher price point due to the use of more material.

When choosing a carpet, knowing your budget might help to guide you as to what type of carpet will be most appropriate for you.

Size of carpet

The size of the area to cover should always be a consideration. The bigger the area, the more expensive the carpet.

The carpet location

Some carpets are better suited to some areas than others. For example, a hardwearing carpet, like wool or mix blend, will be better suited to a hallway and stairs due to that area being a high-traffic area. Although wool might cost more than synthetic, it would be worth thinking about how much longer it might last for. Your carpet specialist will be able to advise on this, however if a slightly more expensive carpet would last double the time of a synthetic carpet, and if budget permits, it could be worth paying for a more expensive carpet in the first instance, so you don’t need to replace it too soon.

Other added costs

When it comes to carpeting, it's important to factor in the expenses associated with underlay and other related items. Underlay is essential for carpets because it not only extends the carpets lifespan but also provides the desired softness underfoot and contributes to soundproofing.

Additionally, you should also take into account the cost of installation.

Environmental cost

Some carpets are more environmentally friendly than others. Wool, made from a natural source has less impact on the environment both in the manufacturing process and at the end of its life. It can be more easily recycled than man-made carpets.

Other carpets are made from recycled materials, which are also a good choice when considering the environment.

In summary

While carpets offer an economical flooring option, they do come with environmental considerations. It’s essential to understand your budget, determine the required size, and identify the placement to make informed choice when selecting the most environmentally friendly carpet for your specific needs.
