There is a huge range of carpet types, each with unique characteristics. They are made of different materials, including wool, synthetics, and wool mixes, and have different construction methods and cuts. The type of use a carpet may endure will help determine the most suitable carpet for you.
This article will help identify what is what in the world of carpets.
Wool carpets are made from natural wool fibres and are known for their softness, durability, and natural resistance to stains and dirt. They tend to be hard wearing and have a natural ability to bounce back and keep their shape, meaning they have longevity and look good for longer. A wool carpet naturally filters the air whilst regulating humidity, it is a safe product obtained from a renewable source.
A wool mix carpet is a carpet which is made up of 80% wool and 20% polypropylene or nylon. Adding synthetic fibre to create a wool mix enhances certain properties. Synthetic carpets are known for giving a luxurious underfoot experience, so by adding synthetic to wool and creating a mix you add this luxury to the wool. Synthetic is also easier to wipe clean so by adding a synthetic to a wool carpet increases cleanability.

Olefin carpets are a man-made material and are resistant to moisture so don’t stain quickly, making them suitable for indoor and outdoor use. They are also suitable in children’s rooms for example, where staining may be an issue. However, they are less durable than other materials and may crush more easily, so not recommended for high traffic areas such as stairs and landings.
Polyester carpets are another synthetic option, known for their softness, vibrant colours, and resistance to fading.
Nylon carpets are synthetic and widely used due to their durability, stain resistance, and affordability.
There are various cuts of carpet, with cut pile and loop piles being the most common and each with their own strengths and qualities.
This is one of the most common and popular types of carpet. They can be made from wool or man-made fibres. Cut pile carpets feature cut loops of yarn, giving them a soft and smooth surface. Cut pile carpets are known for their luxurious feel and appearance.
In loop pile carpets, the yarn is left uncut and formed into loops, creating a dense and durable surface. This type is suitable for high-traffic areas as it resists crushing and wear well. Berber carpets are a popular style of loop pile carpet.

As the name suggests, this type combines cut pile and loop pile fibres, creating patterns and textures on the carpet's surface. This gives the carpet a more visually interesting appearance and can help hide footprints and vacuum marks.
When you choose a carpet you need to think about the purpose and the location. If you want something to go in a master bedroom, where footfall is low, then consider a cut pile velvet for that feel of luxury. However if you want something to hide marks and withstand footfall offering durability then a wool loop would be a great choice.
There is such a wide range of cuts and fibres on the market that there will be the right one for you too.
