Hardwood flooring continues to be a hugely popular form of flooring. If you are considering investing in a hardwood floor but don’t know what is what, then here are some popular hardwood floor patterns to consider.
Hardwood flooring can significantly impact the overall look and feel of a room. Wood floors are very much on trend, adding visual interest and architectural detail as they come in so many wood types and patterns.
Additionally hardwood flooring can add huge value to your home so choosing the right style is really important. Below we have explained a little about each option.
Straight or Plank Pattern: This is the most common and straightforward pattern (see below image), where hardwood planks are installed parallel to each other along the length or width of the room. It creates a clean and classic look that suits a wide range of interior styles.
Diagonal Pattern: In this pattern, hardwood planks are installed at a 45-degree angle to the walls of the room. Diagonal patterns can visually elongate a space and add a dynamic element to the flooring design, making it an excellent choice for small rooms or areas where you want to create a focal point.

Chevron Pattern: Similar to herringbone, chevron patterns feature rectangular planks arranged in a zigzag pattern. However, in a chevron pattern, the planks are cut at precise angles to create a continuous, arrow-like design. Chevron patterns have a more contemporary and geometric look, making them a popular choice for modern and eclectic interiors.
Basketweave Pattern: Basketweave patterns consist of alternating sets of perpendicular hardwood planks that intersect to create a woven effect, similar to a traditional basket. This pattern adds texture and visual interest to the flooring and works well in both classic and contemporary settings.
Parquet Pattern: Parquet flooring features intricate geometric designs created by arranging small hardwood blocks or tiles in various patterns, such as squares, diamonds, or hexagons. Parquet patterns offer endless design possibilities and can range from simple to elaborate, adding a touch of luxury and sophistication to any room.
Herringbone Pattern: Herringbone (see below image) is a classic pattern characterized by a series of rectangular planks arranged in a zigzag pattern. Each plank is laid at a 90-degree angle to the adjacent plank, creating a distinctive "V" shape. Herringbone patterns add sophistication and elegance to any space and are often associated with traditional and European-inspired interiors.
Random Width Pattern: In this pattern, hardwood planks of different widths are installed randomly throughout the room, creating a unique and eclectic look. Random width patterns add character and charm to the flooring while showcasing the natural beauty of the wood grain.
These are just a few examples of the many hardwood flooring patterns available. Whether you prefer the timeless elegance of a straight pattern or the intricate detail of a parquet design, there's a pattern to suit every style and preference.
They can all come in different woods including oak, ash, walnut and maple depending on the look you are after.
