When it comes to wood, you have 2 choices. Solid wood, or engineered wood.
Here we seek to clear up the mysteries of engineered wood and help you get to grips with all you need to know about this popular flooring choice.
Let's clarify the difference between engineered and solid wood. Solid wood hardwood flooring is made of the same timber throughout its entire thickness, using more of the tree and making it more expensive and less eco-friendly.
An Engineered wood floorboard is made up of three or four layers of wood Plywood, HDF Heavy density fibreboard, single core birch, spruce and oak which are glued together to create a solid plank which can be between 12-20mm.
This layering makes it strong and hardwearing.
On top of the layers is a real-wood veneer of around 2.5-6mm. This top layer means that as the wood suffers wear and tear over time (as all floors will) it can be sanded back and treated with an oil or varnish to restore the original finish.
Usually, an engineered wood floor is sanded every 10-15 years, depending on the wear and tear of your floor and the look you are wanting.
It can come in a huge variety of colours to give you the bespoke look you are after.
Regarding its installation it can be available with a click or tongue-and-groove; Both can be stuck down or floated.

It is practical for a family, as spills are easy to clean up and dirt is easy to sweep or hoover away. When cleaning spills from any wood floor, be sure to use a cloth that has been well wrung so as not to cause water damage to the wood and it must be done as soon as possible.
It is suitable for anywhere in the house except bathrooms where it will be exposed to humidity.
Wood can be laid in many ways achieving different effects. There are plank options, herringbone and chevron to name a few and these give effects, so the pattern you choose can determine the style of the room.
It can come in a huge variety of colours to give you the bespoke look you are after and the different shades engineered wood comes in will enable you to create the look and feel you want for your room.
Engineered wood floors can be dressed up or down using rugs and soft furnishings to change the look of the room and rugs also help absorb noise as wood floors naturally amplify sound.
Engineered Wood Flooring is a great solution for flooring.
It is easy to clean with a quick sweep or a very well wrung mop should something spill on it and is extremely durable so can withstand heavy footfall.
It comes in a range of colours and styles and can go almost anywhere in your house. It also comes in a whole range of grades and finishes so you really can create the bespoke look that you desire. It's easy to change the look seasonally with the addition or removal or rugs on top as well.
It does not expand and contract to the same extent as solid wood which would not be suitable for rooms like bathrooms.
It is eco friendly as it lends itself to wider boards where as with solid wood you would be using a large amount of tree to achieve this look and a bonus is, it is less expensive than solid wood.
Maintenance products are available to keep your new floor in tip top condition. To add extra protection to a satin or matt lacquered floor you can apply Protect+ which is a hardener to protect the floor.
There are so many pros to engineered woods, however as with any floor it is ultimately down to your lifestyle, your needs and how you want your home to look.
