Every flooring project starts with a conversation about how people actually live. For Becca, that meant a floor that could keep up with a busy family.
Her 1970s detached home in Cambridge has a large open-plan lounge, kitchen and dining room, where cooking, eating and relaxing all happen in one connected space. The existing carpets had reached the end of their life and were becoming harder to keep looking fresh.

Becca had loved the warmth the carpet brought to the room, but it simply was not practical for modern family life. She wanted something completely different for the next chapter of her home:
Most importantly, she wanted the whole downstairs to feel lighter and more spacious. That point shaped almost every decision that followed.
When Becca visited our Cambridge showroom, we looked at several wood-effect floors together. One caught her eye almost straight away: Harvey Maria's MSeries Natural Oak Plank in White Oak, from our LVT range.
Some clients spend weeks deciding. Becca simply knew.
Darker oak finishes can make a room feel enclosed. White Oak has soft, natural tones and a subtle grain that gives the warmth of real timber with a clean, modern look, suiting contemporary and traditional interiors alike.

Lighter tones reflect more natural daylight, so rooms feel brighter and more open. In an open-plan layout, one continuous floor connects the kitchen, dining and lounge areas while each still feels like its own zone. A neutral oak finish also works with almost any change of furniture or wall colour later on.
The practical side mattered just as much. Harvey Maria's luxury vinyl flooring has a durable wear layer that resists everyday knocks and scratches from children, pets and constant foot traffic. It is waterproof and easy to clean, and unlike traditional timber, it never needs sanding or refinishing.
We never recommend a final decision until a customer has seen the floor at home. Daylight, evening lighting, kitchen units and furniture all change how a floor reads. During our site survey, we brought Harvey Maria samples into each area of Becca's open-plan space, and seeing White Oak against her own décor confirmed it was the right choice.
Luxury vinyl tile is only as good as the surface beneath it. A smooth, stable subfloor prevents movement, protects the adhesive bond and lets every plank sit flat. Any imperfection underneath can eventually show through the finished surface, known in the trade as telegraphing. The Contract Flooring Association publishes guidance on getting this right.
The subfloor throughout Becca's home was chipboard. It was structurally sound, but chipboard is not normally suitable as a direct base for fully bonded LVT.
So we first fitted 6mm flooring-grade plywood across the whole area. Made specifically for flooring, it gives a rigid, dimensionally stable surface that supports glued LVT for many years. Every sheet was fixed at the correct fixing centres. Every fixing point was checked. Every joint was inspected.
We then feather-finished each joint with specialist smoothing compound, removing even the slightest height difference between boards. You will never see this stage, but it is why the finished floor looks smooth from every angle.
Becca had cleared most of the furniture before we arrived, but an American-style fridge freezer still needed moving. These are exceptionally heavy and can easily damage a floor if handled carelessly. John used specialist air mover equipment to lift and reposition it without stressing the old floor or the new one.
Once the carpets came up, we also found years of accumulated wiring around the edges of the rooms: broadband, alarm, smart lighting, television, speaker and telephone cables among them. Rather than working around it, John rerouted, grouped and secured the cables wherever possible, leaving a tidier home and easier maintenance in future.
The Harvey Maria White Oak planks went down in a consistent layout across the whole open-plan space, flowing naturally through each doorway, around the kitchen units and into adjoining areas. The result reads as one continuous surface rather than separate rooms, and the clean plank lines let daylight travel right through the downstairs.

Once the final plank was down, every appliance went back exactly where it belonged, and the house was thoroughly cleaned.
The change was striking. The whole downstairs feels brighter, larger and more contemporary. Cleaning is simple. The surface is durable enough for everyday family life. Just as importantly, Becca now has a floor suited to the way her family lives. It is exactly what she hoped for when she first walked into our showroom.
If you are thinking of replacing carpet with a hard-wearing wood-effect floor, we would be glad to help. Visit our Cambridge showroom to see the Harvey Maria collection, or arrange a home survey, and we will bring samples to you, so you can see each floor in your own light before you decide.
